Santa Ana Star Casino, New Mexico's Best Bet, is teaming up with Unicor LLC to host a free community shredding event. Aimed at combatting identity theft, guests are invited to bring paper documents to the casino on Saturday, Aug. 25, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., where they will be securely destroyed and recycled.
"With identity theft increasing exponentially over the past few years, now is the time to take a practical, proactive approach to protecting personal information," said Santa Ana Star Casino Hotel Director of Marketing Tammy Neil. "Santa Ana Star Casino Hotel is proud to provide this easy and convenient way for the people of our community to securely dispose of their sensitive documents."
At Santa Ana Star Casino Hotel's community shredding event, Unicor LLC will be accepting paper documents for destruction. Guests can each bring a maximum of two cardboard boxes or one standard trash bag of paper to the event. All documents will be securely destroyed and then recycled. This is a free event open to all members of the community.
"It's our hope that this event will raise awareness about this issue and inspire the people of our community to take practical steps to reduce their risk of identity theft," said Neil.
In March 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported identity theft as the second most common consumer complaint reported to the commission and other law enforcement agencies in 2017. When compared to the previous year, identity theft through credit card fraud rose by 23 percent.
